2017 Nominee

Charlene Lyford is from Greene, New York in the Southern portion of Chenango County, 2o minutes North of Binghamton.

Charlene became a force in women’s running in the Northeast by training on the hills surrounding the village of Greene. She often joked that she used telephone poles instead of a stopwatch to do speed and interval work.

The Vestal 20k Road Race is one of the toughest and grueling races in New York State due to the constant rolling hills and warm June temperatures. Charlene has won the race more than any other person - 7 times.

She also won the Lilac Festival 10k in 2000 in 36 minutes and 3 seconds.

Charlene posted a half marathon time of 1 hour- 21 minutes and 9 seconds At the Skunk Cabbage Race in Ithaca in 2000, a record that still stands today. Her biggest accomplishment came with back-to-back wins at the Vermont City Marathon in Burlington, Vermont in 2000 and again in 2001.

In fact, Charlene qualified for the US Olympic team in 2000 and ran the race the same year as Michelle Lafleur in 2 hours-forty-seven minutes and 23 seconds.

Charlene was our Mountain Goat Run Champion in 1999 and again in 2001.
